Embrace Pet Insurance was founded in 2003 and began as the winning idea in a business plan contest at the Wharton School of Business. It was able to sell its first policy three years later and has grown steadily since then. The company operates out of Cleveland, Ohio, but offers policies for pets in all 50 states.

Embrace Pet Insurance coverage

Embrace Pet Insurance has a few policies you can consider for your pets. It has policies for cats and dogs, divided into two types — accident-only and accident and illness plans. There are caveats to qualifying for these two plan types, which will be discussed below.

What an Embrace Pet Insurance plan offers

What does Embrace Pet Insurance cover? It covers your pet’s illnesses, injuries and accidents — from genetic conditions to poisoning, surgery to medication. If your pet needs diagnostics, that gets covered as well. Whether you’re taking out a policy for a cat or a dog, these plans cover a lot of preventable conditions like parvo, Lyme disease and parasites. It can also cover orthopedic exams and conditions, chronic conditions and even cancer.

You should also be aware that pet dental insurance coverage and costs are included in the pet insurance policies Embrace offers, which include costs for dental problems like gingivitis and procedures like root canals.

Wellness Rewards is a separate product from Embrace that you can add to your policy. It reimburses you for several expenses, including regular exams, flea treatments, grooming and nail trimming, prescription diet food, and cremation or burial.

Here are some perks of having the Wellness Rewards along with your policy:

  • You can use the full reward amount from the moment you sign up
  • You can get an annual reward of $25
  • This product can be added to any plan

What an Embrace Pet Insurance doesn’t offer

While your Embrace Pet Insurance can cover a wide range of costs for your pet’s health, there are some things it cannot be used for, such as pre-existing conditions. You should note, however, that there are some exceptions to this rule, particularly when the pre-existing condition is deemed curable. For example, if your pet had a fracture before the policy started but hasn’t shown any symptoms of such a condition in 12 months, there’s a possibility that Embrace will cover it in the future.

Other conditions that aren’t covered by these policies include breeding and pregnancy costs, cloning or DNA testing, illness or injury brought about by neglect, cruelty, or any sport or cosmetic procedures. If someone in your family deliberately hurts your dog, this insurance policy won’t cover it.

Also worth noting is that these policies don’t cover routine veterinary and preventative care costs.

Types of coverage plan options available

What does pet insurance cover? Just like insurance policies made for humans, coverage can vary between companies and policies. Below, we outline the accident-only and accident/illness plans offered by Embrace.

Accident-only

The accident-only policy by Embrace Pet Insurance covers injuries caused by accidents. These include injuries that can occur if your pet is hit by a vehicle, ingests a foreign body or falls down the stairs in your home.

This policy will cover the cost of emergency care associated with the accident that caused the injury. This includes the cost of hospitalization, surgery, diagnostic testing and prescription drugs for the same injury. If special care and rehabilitation are needed for such injuries, this policy will cover them, too.

What this policy doesn’t cover, however, are ailments that aren’t associated with the accident. So, if your pet suddenly has an ear infection or suffers from diarrhea while recuperating from its injuries, the cost of treating those will come out of pocket.

Accident and illness

This policy may be a better fit if you want more of your pet’s ailments and injuries covered. It covers injuries caused by accidents and common ailments your pets may experience, but it will not cover any pets that are 15 or older.

When you choose to get an accident and illness policy from Embrace, some of the health problems it can cover include conditions that are breed specific. This means you don’t have to look for specific dog insurance for popular breeds.

However, some breeds are more prone to certain genetic issues. If you want to know how much pet insurance is going to cost, be aware that premiums for your policy may vary from breed to breed because of this.

The same goes for cats that are covered by this type of policy. Since there are cat breeds that are more susceptible to specific ailments than others, the premiums will reflect this.

Other items that factor into your insurance plan’s total premiums include your pet’s age, location, annual deductible, reimbursement percentage and annual maximum.

Embrace Pet Insurance accessibility

No matter where you are in the U.S., Embrace can provide you with coverage for your pet. It has a website you can visit for in-depth information on its policies, informative blogs and getting quotes for your chosen policy.

Contact information

If you need to get in touch with Embrace Pet Insurance customer service, you can call between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm EST during weekdays and from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm EST on Saturdays at (800) 511-9172. The last option can only be used by following this link when you register for a My Embrace Pet Insurance account.

Deductibles

Embrace has a few annual deductible options you can choose from. These are $200, $300, $500, $750 and $1,000. Aside from deductibles, you can also set a cap on your reimbursement levels, starting at $5,000 up to $30,000. You can also set your reimbursement options to three specific percentages — 70%, 80% or 90%.

Limitations

You can only get an Embrace Pet Insurance policy for your dog or cat. Exotic pets, farm animals and other pet types aren’t eligible for coverage with this insurance company. Pets that are over 15 years of age are not eligible for coverage under the accident and illness plan.

Waiting period

Embrace Pet Insurance’s waiting period for injuries and illnesses varies. For illnesses, your waiting period is two weeks. For injuries, it’s two days.

There are also waiting periods for specific conditions. Orthopedic conditions require a six-month waiting period before you can file a claim. If your dog gets sick during the waiting period, these ailments can be excluded from the coverage and labeled as pre-existing conditions.

The waiting period starts on the day the policy becomes effective, which is the day after the policy is purchased. So if you bought your policy on February 14, it becomes effective on the 15th, which is when you start counting.

Cancellation policy

If you want to cancel your Embrace Pet Insurance policy for any reason, there are a few things you need to be aware of. If the cancellation is made within 30 days of your start date and there have been no claims made to your policy, you can get a full refund of your payment. If the cancellation is made after 30 days of your start date, your refund will be prorated. You will also be entitled to this prorated refund if you’ve already made an Embrace Pet Insurance claim and decide to cancel the policy.

If you cancel your policy and later decide to sign up again with Embrace, any ailments your pet was diagnosed with or treated for during the previously held policy will be considered pre-existing conditions in subsequent policies.

Embrace Pet Insurance customer satisfaction

One way you can gauge how trustworthy companies are is to check customer satisfaction via different portals. Aside from third-party ratings coming from sources like AM Best and BBB, you should also check customer reviews on Embrace Pet Insurance.

Third-party ratings

Embrace gets an A+ rating from BBB. It also has an A+ financial stability rating on AM Best via its mother company, American Modern Insurance Group.

Pet owner reviews and complaints

While the company scores high in third-party ratings, Embrace Pet Insurance reviews and complaints are a mixed bag. On Yelp, it has a low two-star rating out of 422 reviews; on TrustPilot, Embrace has a 4.3 score regarding pet parents’ satisfaction. Google Reviews gives the company 4.3 stars out of 5.
